The Battle of Vertières was the final battle leading to the liberation of our country and the fight against slavery. Jean Jacques Dessalines and his army stood firm to fight against the French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the most powerful forces of the time. They fought to say no to all oppression seeking to trample on our people’s right to live freely!
221 years later, Haiti is going through a very difficult time in which insecurity and violence plague many areas of the country, accelerating the lack of access fo key necessities due to limited access to many roads.
This situation has also affected schools, with children often unable to attend classes because of the distance they must travel, blocked roads, or lack of resources. How can we draw on the example of the Battle of Vertières to find a solution to this crisis and rise with greater strength?
The history of a country serves as a guide, showing where it has come from and where it is heading. The Battle of Vertières is not only a symbol of revolution, but also a moment when our ancestors stood firmly against all forms of domination and oppression! Today, at APA, we find ourselves at a crossroads in history as we work to bring change to our communities. To achieve this, we are equipping Teacher Leaders, Parent Leaders, School Leaders, and Student Leaders – a network of civic leaders – with the tools that will enable them to become agents of change in their communities.
Investing in transformational leadership will allow APA to achieve its objectives. Our civic leaders work alongside community members to create a better tomorrow where all students have equitable access to education and where educators are properly equipped will to serve their country.
The commemoration of the 221st anniversary of the Battle of Vertières should be a moment of reflection, a time to consider the sacrifices our ancestors made so that we could be free – and also how we can contribute to the ongoing struggle for justice today. Capois Lamort once said, “Forward, bullets are just dust!” Today we face all forms of bullets, including inequity and disparities in access to resources. These are the reasons why APA works hand in hand with our community members through a range of programs, equipping civic leaders for a better future, and to contribute to thriving communities and true liberation.
As we celebrate 10 years of our movement, APA invites everyone to join us in this modern-day battle for change. As the proverb says, “Many hands lighten the load.” We need everyone in this collective effort. Join us!
