Active Pedagogy: What is it?

What is active pedagogy? Active pedagogy is an approach that allows us to see learners not as vessels to be filled, but as a fire we are igniting. In the traditional approach, the transmission of knowledge was prioritized. But with the active pedagogy approach, instead of saying "knowledge transmission," we say "knowledge construction". With this approach, teachers place learners in an environment where they construct their own knowledge, making meaningful discoveries throughout the learning process. The teacher is present only as a guide, a facilitator, a mentor.

With the active pedagogy approach, teaching is done with love. Teachers value the emotional aspect. One of the differences between the traditional approach and this modern approach is the reaction of teachers to learners' actions. When learners make a mess, the teacher does not punish them harshly –  but instead gives them a logical consequence. This logical consequence represents the teacher's response to the learners' misbehaving as well as allows learners to continue learning even if they face a consequence. In the active pedagogy approach, there is zero (0) corporal punishment; strict discipline is not used in the classroom. Learners feel comfortable learning in an environment conducive to their wellbeing, joy, and needs.

We encourage all teachers to use this approach, seeking to understand it so that learners can benefit from the quality education we all desire. The quality instruction that learners will receive will lead us to develop a series of model communities throughout the country.

Let us continue to educate, influence, and make an impact to change our country. Learners are the symbol of change that all Haitian dream of. Let us push forward – for the students, for our nation.
